About Our Faculty

The Faculty of Medicine encompasses all faculty of both the Medical School and the Dental School. There are, as of September 2010, 972 Professors, 1,356 Associate Professors, 2,259 Assistant Professors, and 6,804 Annual Appointees including Instructors and Lecturers. The size of the faculty reflects the fact that they are the teachers not only of medical students and graduate students, but also of more than 8,700 trainees in the 17 affiliated institutions. These trainees include interns, residents, clinical fellows, and postdoctoral fellows (research fellows).

Harvard Medical School has a large and distinguished faculty committed to leadership in alleviating human suffering caused by disease. The School’s main quadrangle—located in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area—comprises dozens of labs, classrooms and offices, serving as a home for more than 140 tenure and tenure-track faculty. But the School extends beyond the Quad. HMS has affiliation agreements, administered by the Office for Academic and Clinical Affairs, with 17 hospitals and research institutes. These vital teaching and research partners include more than 10,000 physicians and scientists with HMS faculty appointments. Many of the affiliates offer faculty development and diversity resources.
